The Auckland Trotting Club Inc. is a 133 year old club that operates a membership based organisation which owns and operates the premier venue for Harness Racing in the North Island and races most Thursday or Friday nights of the year.

Auckland Trotting Club Inc. is operated by a member elected board consisting of a President, Vice-President and four other directors. The Senior Management of the organisation is hired by the board and reports to the board on a monthly basis.

With an annual turnover of $17 million and a net asset base of $125 million, the organisation employs over 300 employees on a full-time, part-time and casual basis. Our business is focused on Harness Racing, Property Development, The Alex Bar & Eatery, Gaming and Wagering.

  • ATC Formed

    1890

    The first Auckland Cup was raced in 1890, the same year the ATC was formed. Alexandra Park has come a long way since its 19th century formation.

  • Rowe Handicap Trot

    1918

    The Rowe Handicap Trot was established honouring John Rowe who served as President of the Auckland Trotting Club from 1905-1934 and President of the NZ Trotting Conference from 1909-1922.

  • New Epsom Stand

    1923

    The Epsom Stand was built after the original wooden grandstand was destroyed by a cyclone in 1918.

  • Inter-Dominion Championships

    1948

    The Auckland Trotting Club hosted the Inter-Dominion Championships at Alexandra Park where the Pacers Grand Final was won by Emulous.

  • Racing Under Lights

    1958

    The track lights were switched on for the first time on New Year’s Eve.

  • Cardigan Bay

    1961

    Cardigan Bay, possibly one of the best pacers of all time, raced for the first time at Alexandra Park and notched up 43 wins in New Zealand before going to race in the USA. He was returned to Auckland to retire until his death in 1988 and his final resting place is at Alexandra Park.

  • Centennial Stand

    1988

    The Centennial Stand was opened and was considered one of the best facilities of its kind in Australasia.

  • Award Winning Stables

    1990

    The award winning stables complex opens at Alexandra Park.

  • HALL OF FAME

    New Trotting Hall of Fame

    1997

    The Noel Taylor New Zealand Trotting Hall of Fame opened replacing the old facilities established in 1969.

  • Blues

    Home of the Auckland Blues

    2014

    Construction of a high performance training centre for the Auckland Blues, as well as use of the Alexandra Park infield for their training ground.

  • Urban Village Development

    2014

    Members vote to proceed with the brownfield development of 223 Green Lane West, a luxury urban village which will house over 700 residents as well as 19 retailers.

Governance

The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Auckland Trotting Club and is elected by the membership. It plays a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic direction of the club and ensuring the right strategic programmes are put in place and then implemented.
